8 Step Emergency Lighting Checklist
Emergency lighting is often an overlooked element of building safety, yet it is one of the most important. You must ensure that there are safe exit routes in the event of a fire.
Without emergency lighting - even in a familiar building – exiting a building in an emergency life or death situation can be far more challenging.
Your emergency lighting should be checked by a ‘responsible person’ on a monthly basis, to ensure that it is in perfect working order.
- Fire Guard Services supply, install, commission, service and maintain emergency lighting equipment under the British Standards Code of Practices for Emergency Lighting (BS 5266-1:2016)
- Our engineers are trained to the highest standard to install and certify your emergency lighting system and to ensure that it will work perfectly in the event of a fire
- In line with BS5266-1:2016, we recommend your emergency lights are serviced on a six-monthly basis
Monthly Emergency Lighting – 8 Step Safety Checklist
- Emergency light testing may require the mains electricity supply to be switched off – so plan ahead to avoid disruption
- Always use the specialist key switch to test the lighting
- Use the fuse box if you do not have access to a key switch
- Check that all the emergency lighting is working
- Once the lights have been checked, restore the mains supply and check that the green LED light is illuminated within the light fittings
- Clean the emergency lights, if needed
- For fluorescent lighting, check for significant areas of black on the lamp and replace if needed
- Remember to log your test in the emergency lighting fire logbook and report to your fire safety professionals if you have any concerns
