What we can provide
Complete fire extinguisher services for your premises
Fire extinguishers provide an important first response to a small, controllable fire, but only when the correct type is available, clearly located and ready to operate. Choosing unsuitable equipment or allowing an extinguisher to fall into poor condition can put people at greater risk.
Fire Guard Services can manage your fire extinguishers throughout their working life. We assess the risks within your premises, recommend suitable equipment, install and commission it correctly, and provide ongoing maintenance. Whether you need protection for one workplace or consistent servicing across several sites, you will receive practical guidance and a dependable service.
Site surveys and extinguisher audits
We assess your premises, existing equipment and fire risks to identify whether your extinguishers remain suitable, sufficient and correctly positioned.
Supply of suitable fire extinguishers
We supply carefully selected extinguishers matched to the types of fire and specific hazards identified within your premises.
Professional installation and commissioning
Every extinguisher is correctly positioned, securely installed and commissioned on site, ensuring it is safe, accessible and ready for use.
Annual fire extinguisher servicing
Our technicians inspect and service your extinguishers every 12 months, helping keep them reliable, operational and maintained in accordance with BS 5306-3.
Extended servicing and replacement
We complete extended servicing at the appropriate intervals and advise when damaged, expired or unsuitable equipment needs to be replaced.
Recharging or replacement after use
Any extinguisher that has been discharged requires immediate attention. We assess the equipment and arrange safe recharging or replacement as appropriate.
Location, mounting and signage checks
We check that extinguishers are visible, accessible and securely mounted, with the correct identification signs displayed clearly nearby.
Service labels and maintenance records
Each completed service is clearly documented, providing an accurate maintenance history and straightforward evidence to help support your compliance responsibilities.
Single and multi-site support
From individual premises to larger property portfolios, we coordinate consistent servicing, documentation and remedial work across every location you manage.
Your responsibilities
Suitable equipment, correctly located and properly maintained
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person must take general fire precautions that are appropriate to the premises. Where portable fire-fighting equipment is required, its type, number and location should follow the findings of the fire risk assessment.
Choose for the actual risks
Extinguishers should be selected for the fuels, equipment, activities, occupants and escape arrangements in each part of the building. A familiar extinguisher is not automatically the right one for every fire.
Keep equipment ready for use
Equipment should remain visible, accessible, correctly mounted and free from obvious damage or tampering. Formal servicing and accurate records help the Responsible Person demonstrate ongoing maintenance.
BS 5306: This family of British Standards provides recognised guidance for the selection, positioning, commissioning and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers. Requirements should be interpreted for the premises by a competent person.
Extinguisher types
Six common fire extinguisher types and their uses
UK portable fire extinguishers are usually red with a coloured label identifying the extinguishing agent. The label and class markings help distinguish their intended uses, but the correct provision must be based on the premises and its fire risk assessment.
01

Water
Red label
Class A
For fires involving wood, paper, textiles and other solid combustibles. Common in offices, retail spaces and storage areas containing ordinary combustible materials.
Important: Never use on live electrical equipment, flammable liquids or cooking oils.
02

Foam (AFFF)
Cream label
Class AClass B
Suitable for many solid-combustible and flammable-liquid risks. Foam can provide useful mixed-risk cover in offices, shops, garages and forecourts when correctly specified.
Important: Not generally recommended for live electrical equipment or cooking-oil fires.
03

CO₂
Black label
ElectricalClass B
Carbon dioxide leaves no residue and is commonly specified around electrical equipment, server rooms, switchgear and selected flammable-liquid risks.
Important: Limited cooling can allow re-ignition. It is not suitable for cooking oils or deep-seated Class A fires.
04

Powder (ABC)
Blue label
Class AClass BClass CElectrical
A versatile extinguisher for several risks, often used in garages, workshops, plant areas and outdoor industrial settings when supported by the fire risk assessment.
Important: Discharge can severely reduce visibility and affect breathing, so powder is not normally preferred in enclosed occupied spaces.
05

Wet chemical
Yellow label
Class F
Designed for fires involving cooking oils and fats. Wet chemical extinguishers are commonly specified in commercial kitchens, restaurants, cafés and catering premises.
Important: Do not use water or another extinguisher unless it is specifically rated for the cooking-oil risk.
06

EV/Lithium
Green label
Lithium-ionEV batteries
Specialist equipment may be required where lithium-ion batteries are stored, charged or handled, including e-bikes, tools, battery systems and electric vehicles.
Important: Lithium-ion fires can reignite and present complex hazards. Extinguisher provision and emergency procedures require specialist risk assessment.
Never put yourself at risk to fight a fire. Raise the alarm, follow the evacuation plan and call the Fire and Rescue Service. Portable extinguishers should only be used by someone who is trained, has a clear escape route and judges that it is safe to do so.

Inspection and servicing
What we check during a fire extinguisher service
Our technician examines each extinguisher and its location, identifies defects and records the work completed. The precise procedure depends on the extinguisher type, age and condition.
- Safety pin, tamper seal and operating mechanism
- Pressure indication or stored-pressure condition
- Body, head cap, hose and horn condition
- Weight or contents against the expected specification
- Legibility of operating instructions and service label
- Correct location, visibility, mounting and signage
- Evidence of corrosion, leakage, damage or discharge
- Maintenance record, remedial advice and next service due date

FAQs
Fire extinguisher FAQs
Clear answers to common questions about choosing, maintaining and servicing portable fire extinguishers.
Why do your fire extinguishers cost more than some sold online?
Some online prices cover only the extinguisher itself. Our service can include assessing your premises, selecting the appropriate extinguisher types and capacities, correct positioning, installation and commissioning, clear documentation and ongoing servicing support.
This helps ensure your extinguishers are suitable for the risks within your premises—not simply the cheapest products available. When comparing prices, check whether delivery, installation, commissioning, signage, certification and future maintenance are included. We provide a clear quotation so you understand exactly what you are paying for.
How often should business fire extinguishers be serviced?
Portable fire extinguishers should normally receive a basic service at least once a year by a competent person. The Responsible Person should also arrange regular visual checks between services so equipment remains accessible, undamaged and in the correct location.
How do I know which fire extinguisher my business needs?
The correct provision depends on the fuels, electrical equipment, activities, layout, occupancy and escape arrangements in your premises. It should be specified from the fire risk assessment rather than chosen from the colour band alone.
What do UK fire extinguisher colours mean?
The identification band indicates the extinguishing agent: water is red, foam is cream, carbon dioxide is black, dry powder is blue and wet chemical is yellow. Always read the extinguisher label and fire rating before use.
Which extinguisher is commonly used for electrical equipment?
Carbon dioxide extinguishers are commonly specified for electrical equipment because they do not leave residue. The right choice still depends on the equipment, surrounding fire risks and environment, and electrical power should be isolated when it is safe to do so.
Which extinguisher is used for cooking oils and fats?
Wet chemical extinguishers are designed for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats and are commonly used in commercial kitchens. Water and other extinguishers not specifically rated for this hazard must not be used.
Can dry powder extinguishers be used indoors?
Dry powder can be effective on several fire types, but discharge can reduce visibility and create breathing difficulties. It is therefore not normally preferred in enclosed occupied spaces unless the fire risk assessment identifies a specific need.
Who is responsible for fire extinguishers at work?
The Responsible Person must ensure appropriate fire precautions are in place. Depending on the premises, this may be an employer, owner, landlord, occupier, facilities manager, managing agent or another person with control of the building.
