Dontel Roofing Supplies Tottenham

Dontel Roofing Supplies is a long-established roofing supply specialist, first established in 2003, with multiple branches across the UK. Fire Guard Services has been supporting Dontel since 2023, delivering Fire Risk Assessments and upgrading fire safety measures across several sites. 

With a new branch set to open in Tottenham in February 2026, Dontel asked us to provide a complete fire safety package for the premises, ensuring the site was compliant, properly equipped, and protected with a modern alarm system that suited the realities of a busy trade counter and stock environment.

The requirement

As with many new or newly-occupied commercial premises, the priority was two-fold:

• Establish a clear, documented compliance position via a Fire Risk Assessment (FRA), with practical, prioritised actions.

• Implement reliable, fit-for-purpose protection with the right extinguishers and a fire alarm system designed around the building’s layout and means of escape.

Tottenham will be a high-activity setting; moving stock, deliveries, and day-to-day operations mean downtime and disruption have to be kept to a minimum. The solution needed to be robust, simple to manage, and scalable as the site evolves.

Our approach

We delivered the work in three coordinated stages, allowing Dontel’s team to keep the branch operating while improvements were implemented methodically.

1) Fire Risk Assessment

We carried out a full Fire Risk Assessment to identify hazards, people at risk, and the adequacy of existing controls. The assessment focused on the real operational profile of a roofing supplies branch—vehicle movements, storage/stock areas, back-of-house spaces, and customer-facing trade counter activity.

Outputs included:

• A documented risk rating and clear action plan

• Practical recommendations to strengthen day-to-day controls

• Advice to support ongoing compliance management and review cycles

2) Fire extinguisher supply and installation

Based on the building layout and risks identified in the FRA, we supplied and installed appropriate fire extinguishers in the correct locations to support early-stage firefighting (where safe to do so), with a view to straightforward access, visibility, and routine inspection.

This included:

• Correct placement to support escape routes and key risk areas

• Commissioning/hand-over information to help staff understand the basics of safe use and checks

• A plan to support ongoing servicing and maintenance

3) Fire alarm system – EDA Zerio Plus wireless, installed to Category L4

To provide effective early warning with minimal disruption, we installed an EDA Zerio Plus wireless fire alarm system, a wireless solution designed to reduce the need for intrusive cabling while maintaining a structured, zoned approach. 

The system was installed to Category L4. In practical terms, an L4 system provides automatic detection on the main escape routes (such as corridors and stairways), giving occupants early warning along the routes they’ll use to evacuate. 

Wireless technology is particularly valuable in active commercial environments because it allows:

• Faster installation and commissioning with reduced building disturbance

• Flexibility for future layout changes or extensions

• Efficient fault-finding and device management when properly maintained

The outcome

By combining a thorough FRA with targeted physical protection and a modern alarm installation, the Tottenham branch now has:

• A documented, actionable compliance baseline

• Correctly located firefighting equipment to support safe first response

• A commissioned wireless fire alarm system aligned to the building’s escape strategy (Category L4) 

Just as importantly, Dontel has a clear pathway for ongoing compliance—with recommendations, records, and the ability to maintain and service critical fire safety systems without unnecessary operational disruption.
